NIVEA SUSTAINABILITY

Corporate Sustainability Goals

In 2020, we have set new targets to meet in 2025 following the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. This is to ensure our sustainability actions can have the biggest impact and make a significant difference in line with global sustainability goals.

FOR CLIMATE POSITIVE FUTURE

We see climate change as one of the greatest challenges we are facing as a society today. Therefore, the reduction of our CO2e emissions is an absolute priority for us. We have set ourselves clear and ambitious targets:

  • Reducing both our direct and indirect CO2e emissions by -30% in absolute terms by 2025
  • Move to climate neutral operations by 2030.

To achieve this, we are working hard on energy efficiency measures in production, on the energy optimisation of our logistics, and on the topic of sustainable real estate.

FOR FULLY CIRCULAR RESOURCES

As a manufacturer of skin care products globally, we need to reduce material usage and close the loop where possible. We are working hard to identify innovative solutions to avoid, reduce, reuse and recycle our plastic packaging. Further, we have also considered the circularity of our ingredients and formulations.

Our targets include:

  • 50% reduction of fossil-based virgin plastic by 2025
  • 30% recycled material in our plastic packaging by 2025
  • 100% of our packaging refillable, reusable or recyclable by 2025
  • 30% waste reduction in our production facilities by 2025 (vs. base year 2018)

FOR SUSTAINABLE LAND USE

As we rely on natural resources for our product formulas, it is important to guarantee a harmless sourcing of ingredients and packaging materials on the environment.

We are now working on a “sustainable palm road map” in order to achieve a deforestation-free cultivation palm (kernel) oil, together with our support to a sustainable shea supply chain.

Our targets include:

  • All our renewable ingredients should come from sustainable sources by 2025
  • Deforestation-free sourcing of our main raw materials (e.g. palm oil, soya, paper) by 2025
  • 100% of our palm (kernel) oil sourced sustainably by 2020
  • 100% FSC certified paper by 2020

FOR REGENERATIVE WATER ENVIRONMENTS

As water plays a central role also in our production processes, in our product formulas and when consumers use our products, water is an important focus area of our sustainability agenda.

Our targets include:

  • NIVEA 100% free of microplastic by 2021
  • 25% reduction of our water consumption per manufactured product by 2025 (vs. base year 2018)
