The Effects of the Sun at the Beach

How to enjoy the sun while fully protected

When the sun shines, we shine. And the best time to top yourself up with a bit of sun is when on holiday. Whether you spend time on the beach or not, with NIVEA you can enjoy your holiday sun without a care in the world.

Off to the beach

The beach is our favourite place to be in summer. The waves lapping on the shore, sand tickling your toes and the sun shining... wonderful! But there are a few things you need to pay attention to when spending a day on the beach.

Enjoy every moment on the beach

When it comes to the beach, we enjoy even the hottest temperatures. The sea breeze cools us down to a pleasant temperature, and if it is still too hot for us, we just go for a dip in the sea. But don’t be fooled. Even though there is a welcome cooling breeze, the sun’s radiation is still there. And the same is true of the water: 60% of UVB and 85% of UVA rays can reach you down to 50cm beneath the surface of the water. That’s why it’s extremely important to protect yourself with water-resistance sun cream. The great thing is that all NIVEA sun protection body products  are water resistant and therefore protect your skin even while bathing. You can therefore simply use your favourite product.

Enjoy the sun safely

If you always reapply sun protection after swimming and drying off, you can relax and enjoy your day in the sun.

Shade is the best sunlight

The best place in the sun is the place in the shade. This is also true on the beach, particularly if you want to build up a healthy summery skin tone. Even though the shade offers considerable protection from UV light, it does not shield you completely from it. Up to 40% of UV rays still reach you in the shade. That means that you will also tan in the shade. So the risk of getting sunburnt here is considerably higher than most people think. Not even clouds offer complete protection. A cloudy, grey sky reduces UV radiation by only a small percentage. So if you are in the shade or it’s a cloudy day, you should not go without adequate protection.

These are the parts of the skin you should protect in particular on the beach

As a general rule, you should protect your entire body adequately. When applying cream, pay particular attention to the body’s so-called “sun traps” (nose, cheeks, shoulders, neck, arches of your feet, bald head), as these are very exposed to the sun’s rays.
