What is
Mature Skin?

Mature skin is simply skin that has naturally changed over time. As you get older, your skin's production of Collagen and Elastin slows, cell turnover becomes less efficient, and moisture levels can drop. This can lead to visible signs such as fine lines, wrinkles, dryness, and a loss of firmness. While these changes are a normal part of life, they also mean your skin has different needs than it once did.

5 Common Signs of
Mature Skin

Over time, these natural changes can become more noticeable, showing up in different ways on your skin's surface. Here are five of the most common signs to look out for:

A woman smiles ahead, showing her smooth, youthful-looking complexion.

1
Fine lines and wrinkles:
As Collagen and Elastin production slows, your skin can lose its firmness and smoothness, leading to visible lines and creases.

2
Dryness and dehydration:
Mature skin often produces less natural oil, making it more prone to dryness and in need of extra hydration.

3
Thinning skin:
A natural reduction in skin thickness can make it feel more delicate and fragile.

4
Uneven tone and pigmentation:
Sun exposure over the years can lead to age spots or areas of discolouration.

5
Reduced elasticity:
With fewer structural proteins like Collagen and Elastin, your skin can feel less supple and become more prone to sagging.

8 Causes of
Ageing Skin

Skin ageing is a natural part of life, but the way it happens, and how quickly, can be influenced by more than just time. From everyday lifestyle habits to environmental exposure, a variety of factors work together to shape how your skin looks and feels as the years go by. Here are eight of the most common causes:

Slower cell renewal:

Your skin takes longer to replace old cells, which can make it look duller and less radiant.

Reduced oil production:

Less Sebum production as you age can leave your skin feeling drier and more fragile.

Sun exposure:

UV rays break down Collagen over time and can lead to pigmentation changes.

Natural loss of Collagen and Elastin:

These structural proteins naturally reduce over time, leading to a loss of firmness and elasticity.

Environmental stressors:

Pollution and harsh weather can further weaken mature skin's already delicate natural barrier, making it more vulnerable to damage.

Lifestyle factors:

Diet, stress, smoking, and lack of sleep can accelerate visible signs of ageing and mature skin.

Hormonal changes:

Shifts during menopause can affect hydration, texture, and firmness.

Genetics:

Your genetic makeup plays a role in how your skin ages, influencing firmness, elasticity, and the timing of visible changes.

5 Tips to Care for
Mature Skin

While ageing is natural, following these five simple tips can help slow visible signs and keep your skin looking healthy and radiant:

1
Use Sun Protection
Use a product with broad-spectrum protection (with UVA and UVB filters) daily to protect your skin from harmful UV rays, which break down Collagen and cause wrinkles, pigmentation, and loss of firmness.

2
Keep your Skin Hydrated
Keep your skin moisturised to maintain its natural barrier and prevent dryness. Well-hydrated skin looks plumper and smoother and helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines.

3
Antioxidants
Incorporate antioxidants like Vitamin C, Vitamin E, or Bakuchiol in your skincare to neutralise damage from pollution and UV exposure, helping to preserve firmness and brighten your complexion.

4
Healthy Diet
Eat a balanced diet rich in Vitamins, Antioxidants, and healthy fats - such as berries, leafy greens, and Omega-3-rich fish - to support skin regeneration from within.

5
Quality Sleep
Aim for 7–9 hours of restful sleep each night to allow your skin to repair, boost Collagen production, and regenerate skin cells.
